"Marissa Haque & Ikang Fawzi: Upaya Membuat Nyaman Hati Pasangan"

May Allah always bless our marriage... amiiin...

Areas of Interest:

I am interested in things that are "disappeared" from everyday speech, from "text", from public memory, from the   archive, from the material world,  from visibility. Of particular interest to me is the way in which things that are "disappeared" are  made to re-appear. Focusing on the colonial past of Rhodesia and the post-colonial present of  Zimbabwe I look at things that are  "appeared" and interrogate what these ruptures mean for the ways in which colonial   and post-colonial "states" imagine themselves. I pay close attention to the actual mechanics of disappearance and  appearance and analyze why certain things refuse to remain "disappeared". My areas of interest are: Post-Colonial  Studies, African Social History, Race and Gender Studies, Subaltern Studies, Film Studies, Literary Studies, and Cultural and Social Anthropology.

Indonesia's Cinematic Art Stumble and Surge: Marissa Haque Fawzi (is in Residence at Ohio University)

World Paper, New York, USA
June, 2001

By. Marissa Haque Fawzi
An Indonesia Actress, is in Residence at Ohio University

Indonesia as a country among many countries in the world, cannot escape of the effect of globalization. More specially, the Indonesia film industry is influenced and shaped by the cultures and trends of many other nations. This assimilation necessary and positive for progress and increased quality as long as an individual maintains his/ her own touch, so to speak. This process is guaranteed by the fact that our world grows smaller everyday and the boundaries that once existed are no more.

The father of Indonesia film, Mr. Haji Usmar Ismail, was the first Indonesia artist to graduate from the School of Film at the University of California Los Angles as early as the 1940s. Generations to follow in the 1970’s were strongly predisposed to Russian production style and technique with Indonesian graduate from Moscow University such as Syumandjaja and Amy Priono.

Many artists to follow, Producers and Directors are products of Indonesia education and training. Their work, also distinguished, is colored by local wit and wisdom. A result of their efforts has been “Edutainment” or educational entertainment for the Indonesian citizen.

The only trouble with this is seen in the extremely small ratio of these artists in relation to the population of Indonesia, which far exceeds 200 million. If the love of money is the root of all evil it has also been the demise of the film industry in Indonesia. Many Directors viewed the production of movies as a monetary printing press.
The typical Indonesian film left nothing for the viewing public; there was no moral message and no real meaning. By the end of 1980s the film industry has stagnated and come to screeching halt. The Indonesia government further stifled the industry’s creativity and quality, and the differences from one film to the next became almost impossible to discern. It was a frustrating time for the movie-going public and even exasperating for those production teams that sought to create.

In 1990s gave us Garin Nugroho. As a young man, he graduated from University of Indonesia with a degree in Law and attended Indonesia’s Institut Kesenian Jakarta (Indonesian Art Institute). Garin Nugroho was determined to create new standard, and in the mid-1990s he began work. Nugroho presented an Eastern European style of production. Many Indonesian viewers did not understand this style of production and found the storylines difficult to follow, but his works have been honored (and have placed) at almost every international film festivals in which those have appeared.

Toward the end of 1999, a group of young Indonesian film graduates that, to date, do not wish to be identified with other movie production teams, came together to produce. They represent the new techno generation, seeking something new and different from all who came before them, and it is known to Indonesians today as the movie Kuldesak. This independent production team used a grassroots style marketing strategy throughout production. The film smacks of Quentin Tarantino. The theme song from thia movie was also honored by MTV at the MTV awards 2000 in New York.

The year 2000 was phenomenon for Rivai Riza (Film Director), Mira Lesmana and Triawan Munaf (Co Producers) with their award-winning production Petualangan Sherina or the Adventures of Sherina. The British honored this production with the presentation of the British Chavening Award Scholarship to Riza. This is only logical because Riza finished his Master of Arts in screenwriting at a British Institution in 1999. Riza ia rich with British style.

What do we see in the future of the Indonesian film industry? What style do we hope will prevail? There are so many possibilities, but that which cannot be denied and is clear to even those who would close their eyes is that American films are shown on every channel of Indonesian television and fill Indonesian theatres. In this lies an undeniable answer.

We are also aware that American film is a collection of assimilations from across the world. Thus we come full circle of globalization and interdependent world in which we live. We will, each and every one of us, learn from all of those around us without exception, if we hope to progress. This is a continual process that will go on for as long as we breathe.

“Terbang ke Angkasa Biru”: Bunda Marissa Haque Kontemplasi di Pesawat North West

1-marissa_haque_indonesiasia2-us-indonesia-kampus-marissa-haque-saat-di-ohio-university-athens-ohio-us-dulu-2000

M.A. 1st Year Review

Near the end of the Spring Quarter, a Faculty Committee evaluates all first-year M.A candidates. The Committee assesses candidate’s goals for future study as well as what they have accomplished in the program. The Committee’s evaluation functions as the most important feedback a student receives during their first year giving the candidate an objective sense of their progress and determining their course work for the following year. In certain circumstances a candidate could be advised not to continue with the program.

1st Year Review Procedure

A schedule for submission of review materials to the Committee will be posted during the Spring Quarter. Students will be required to submit:

A sample of revised scholarly written work. The written work should be a minimum of 10,000 words long and formatted according to MLA standards.

A statement (approximately 500 words) describing the progress made in the first year of study, as well as indicating likely areas of research for the second year.

Candidates will meet with the Committee and give an oral presentation on the materials submitted. At that meeting, the Committee will present the candidate with an evaluation of their progress and plans.
M.A. Thesis

In order to receive an M.A. in Film Studies, a candidate must complete an original scholarly monograph of at least 50 pages in length. The thesis must be written under the direction of a member of the film studies faculty. In order to insure that the thesis is of current interest to the discipline of film studies, a Thesis Committee selected by the M.A. candidate as well as the Director of the M.A. Program must approve it. Thesis Committees must include the Thesis Advisor, a second faculty member from the School of Film, and a third faculty member from a discipline outside the School of Film.

The variable-credit Written Thesis course hours (usually a minimum of twenty) are generally concentrated in the final quarters of the candidate’s program of study. The School of Film recommends that candidates planning to apply to doctoral programs after receiving their degrees should complete the thesis in Spring Quarter of their second year or by the following summer.

Thesis Procedure

The candidate chooses a Thesis Advisor to chair the Thesis Committee.  The Thesis Advisor must indicate in writing his or her willingness to serve in this capacity. In consultation with the Thesis Advisor, the candidate chooses a prospective Thesis Committee and contacts prospective members to confirm their willingness to serve.

In consultation with the Thesis Advisor, the candidate develops a formal Thesis Prospectus, and submits it to the members of the Thesis Committee. The Thesis Committee has the option to approve, to reject, or to request modifications to the Thesis Prospectus. Once the Thesis Prospectus meets the Thesis Committee’s approval, each Committee member, as well as the Director of the School sign a Thesis Prospectus approval form. The form is then placed on file with the School, accompanied by a copy of the Thesis Prospectus. The candidate must complete the proposed thesis in compliance with the Thesis Prospectus as approved by the Thesis Committee and Director.

The Thesis Advisor determines when the thesis is ready to be presented to the remainder of the Thesis Committee for defense.

The formal oral defense of the thesis before the Thesis Committee must be scheduled no later than the eighth week of the final quarter of study.  It is the candidate’s responsibility to provide each member of the Thesis Committee with a paper copy of the thesis at least a week in advance of the defense. At the defense, the candidate will be asked to provide an opening statement describing the thesis project, and will be required to respond to questions and comments from members of the Thesis Committee. The Thesis Committee will then meet to determine the outcome of the defense, and will immediately inform the candidate whether the thesis is approved as submitted, conditionally approved, or not approved.

The candidate completes any requested revisions under supervision of the Thesis Advisor.  Once these revisions are approved by the Thesis Committee, the final version of the thesis is submitted to both the Director of the School and the Office of the College of Fine Arts (COFA Dean's office, Jennings House) in accordance with their graduation deadlines.

The thesis must be properly formatted in accordance with current MLA Handbook. Candidates can access a .pdf document with the Graduate College guidelines for thesis format, as well as College deadlines in the submission process, at the Graduate College’s Thesis and Dissertation Services website: http://www.ohio.edu/graduate/etd.cfm .

Students are required to submit their thesis electronically. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) process. Theses submitted electronically are processed through the Graduate College and are made available to the public through OhioLink. For further information and training seminars, go to http://www.ohio.edu/graduate/etd.cfm  or contact the Graduate College’s Thesis and Dissertation Services office.
